Sadly, there are still some Americans in this day and age who think America can still say "Jump!" and the rest of the world should start hopping. These are they same people who believe that military force is the solution to every problem. Just like the British had people in 1914 who still thought it was 1890, we have Americans today who still think it is 1945. These people will never vote for someone like Barack Obama. They don't just want or prefer--they need--an old warhorse like John McCain who will try to preserve their idealized image of the past. They don't like McCain so much as they like his "hammer."

    Really? Not ready for these challenges? Sort of like the inexperienced senator for Illinois (Abraham Lincoln) wasn't ready for his? Leadership isn't about experience. It's about judgement and the ability to inspire people to a higher standard. Lord knows we sure need someone to call us to a higher standard! Obama's opponent doesn't even see what the challenges are. All he can find to talk about is the "surge", which of course is now history, and his world view is so far in the past that his election would find the rest of the world passing us by.

    The world has passed us by with Bush sitting on the throne, and he is the one who gave all of it over to "companies", to do as they will. How much worse can it get?     The only thing to say is that I am behind this comment made on another blog:

For any nation to assume leadership of world affairs and be the conscience of the weak and the oppressed, that nation MUST be a war mongering nation.       I am a conservative but former republican voted the first term for this village idiot and have regretted it since.
      Bush and his dream team of old tyrants have led us down the path of death and destruction and driven the country into debt. Every evening when I see the new names of our brave soldiers killed in action I can't help but curse these gang of thugs I helped get elected.
      I may not vote republican for years to come. I know McCain and what he represents and where he wants to lead us and I much rather take a "road less traveled" and vote for Obama. I will know at least what I am not choosing. 1-We don't need a bully in the White House.
      2-We don't need another war at the behest of our so called best friends in Iran.
      3-We don't need any more Abu Ghraibs and gitmos.
      4-We don't need another term with no solution to the Israeli/Palestine issue.
      5-We need to reevaluate our foreign policy and choose who we call friends more carefully.
      6-We need to reestablish alliances with our old Allys.
      7-One size fits all "you are wit us or agin us" is bullying not diplomacy. I gladly pay a little more in taxes and sleep with a clear conscience then go monetarily and morally bankrupt forcing our bases where we are not wanted. Enough already. It's time we returned sanity to the White House.

      Corporate profits are not so evil, unless those who own them (corporations) and have their chunk in them eat sleep and breathe GREED. But that's what has become mostly with our corporate world. And speaking of retirement ! Whom are you kidding! The only ones who will retire and have their nest full of golden eggs is THEM, the Fat Cats! On what planet do you live, friend? Have you been among the people? I met a little old lady with hump on her back working in Wally-world the other day: she looked like she was way past retirement age.. . She said she was hurting and they made her handle the merchandise on her own, even so it was heavy. I was kind to her, comforting her . And she said. I have to work ... I just have too, I just can't make it. Get the picture , Ryan? This is the picture of ordinary people, who have not been lazy and freeloading all their lives, but raising families, working long hours in whatever trade they were...       I find it amazing - frankly unbelieveable - that any group of individuals in the US are basing oposition to Obama on his popularity abroad..... its laughable. What do they want, a US President thats hated ? Have you not had enough of that? Geeeeez.

      It is cetainly true that it should not be blind adoration, that would be silly. The reasons for the popularity are based more on the understanding in European minds re Leadership and its importance in setting a Vision, even having a Vision in the first place, not petty arguments over detail.

      In European Terms my politics are Right of Attilla the Hun, and at the same time I recognise a clear genuine vision Obama has, hence my support despite the clear differences in political ideology. I'll roll my sleeves up and fight the detail of how we get where we are going later. First lets get someone in there who has the appropriate Vision of what we want in our lives.

      Personally I love it that the Right are thinking this way, it will turn into another "attack Obama" session. The continued negative nature of their tactics - based on the old tired spin doctor driven tactics of the last Century will, again, backfire.

      "So Mr President, what do you intend to do about this clear adoration and popularity you have abroad, and its implications for support in American Foreign Policy. After all, the American people want to know what you are going to do about this dangerous state of affairs"

      Give me a break ..... there are some stupid things coming out of this whole election scenario, but the idea that a US President being popular abroad is a bad thing has to be a candidate for quote of this Century - as I cant see many others reaching such a level of imbicility.

      The Opinion Polls in Europe showed Obama way way ahead of McCain long before the recent Obama trip, let alone the 200,000 that travelled to a rock concert in Berlin that Obama just happened to pop along to, to have a chat with a few people who loathed him ...... why do you think they turned up in the first place? Because they hated him?

      It will not be long now before someone claims Hurricane Dolly was an Obama plot to stop McCain's Photo Op, and McCains growing examples of senility are staged managed by dasterdly Socialists trying to Take over the world.

The media love putting us in boxes. Respect starts at home with or without military might, although we are not Switzerland. A corrupt government, overflowing prisons, ethnic disdain, provincial puny thinking, self -preservationist mania-- we are our own problem. Neither Obama or Mc Cain can cure a country that dislikes itself for so many reasons. Great leaders earn respect by leading at home and abroad. I am tired of the over simplification and elementary pandering of the media. Where is the call for unity, education, and generosity. Polls and stereotyping seem like self fulfilling negative prophesies. We need a leader, government and citizenry that think and live differently. Stop the immature blame game. Just look at the crazy lame duck congress recent votes. What can the American public do to wake up the greedy congress? I hope the world likes our next president. I hope we like him. but more than that I hope we like ourselves and perhaps set an example for the world as a country that can rise to the challenges at hand and in the future. We desperately need some core values to rally around. The corporate pushers hope we stay in love with money and distracted enough to never get organized or unified so they can keep robbing and raping the world. And our government is in bed with them. So good luck to any president who tries to mess with this.

        Maslow was noted for his heiarchy of needs that also explains why some would support a person who functions on a much lower level of intelligence because that is the only level they can identify with. Even after Columbus returned from his trip there were those that still would bet their lives that the world was flat. The greatest fear of man is the unknown. Like the WW2 correspondent Ernie Pyle said, "It's not the things you don't know that makes you a fool, it is the things you know that ain't so". Unfortunely America tends to gather around the flag of war more than the concept of peace. I agree that the only tool McCain has to counteract Obamas vision of what could be is the "Hammer" we need to combat an enemy. Many still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destuction and were responsible for 9/11. In the meantime while we are so bogged down fighting this created enemy, those that really attacked us are still alive and well in other Countries.

        Ummm, well that would be because we know they did. Watching him use them in his own country I'd say is fairly substantial proof. Finding chemical traces in abandoned buildings I'd say is even more substantial proof. Finding 38 jets buried in the desert primed to carry weapons which were no longer attached is fairly substantial proof. Even if we didn't find all the evidence later showing that they existed and had been moved off to who knows where, we saw the results of him setting them off in his own country. You can't get much more proof than visually witnessing the results. I thought we were long past the argument that for some reason people believed there were no WMD's.

        iraq did at one point have nuclear, chemical, and biological aspirations. what we are finding now is a part of that past, as indicated by the locations, quality, and dismantled nature of these items such as chemical residues and yellowcake. no one has doubted that iraq once intended to utilize these things. the issue at hand is the fact that all of these programs were, in fact, suspended when the iraqi's said they were. our current ongoing occupation of iraq was predicated upon the notion that the iraqi's did not, in fact, suspend their efforts. the yellowcake, the witnessing of past atrocities... yes, these are all a reflection of efforts prior to the first gulf war. thus, using them to bolster support for an invasion 10 years later is a little dubious.

        Reading these articles regarding Nobama's trip overseas is like reading fiction...People you need to understand that the pages this crap is written on is controlled by the far left which supports Nobama.

        Kevin, your comment was cute but oh so ignorant. Let's see, there was WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Lend Lease, The Marshall Plan, Japanese Reconstruction, the Cold War, the Berlin Air Rescue, etc., etc., etc., What you fail to understand is that American dislike overseas has everything to do with green envy and nothing to do with American policy which has done everything to promote World Peace and well being for as long as we've been a leader in the world. I've heard Ambassador Holbrook in his arrogance having been an Ambassador to Germany suggest that there isn't an inherent dislike of American overseas, but there is an inherent dislike for its current President. Well, I've been traveling Europe and the Far East since the late 70's and there has always been a dislike of America primarily because they think we're arrogant and promoting American hegemony. Maybe so. I guess when you're number one, some of that shows through. My point is, that we don't have allies because they like us. We have them because they need us. And, we've paid for their alliance with American blood and treasure. Oh, and the reason Obama comes across so well, isn't because of his equanimity, it has to do with his perceived malleability. So, get a clue. You ought to understand also that the President of the United States has one and only one overwhelming responsibility and that is the welfare of this country even though that may involve the welfare and stability of another whether that country likes it or not.

        the President of the United States has one and only one overwhelming responsibility and that is the welfare of this country even though that may involve the welfare and stability of another whether that country likes it or not.

        I voted for GW, the first time. I sincerely regret it. The man has proven to be an ass, and that is being charitable. While I have my doubts about Obama, I have to say that I agree with him about American missteps. The republican party is no longer conservatives, it is a bunch of doormats doing the bidding of Israel. So I am thinking I may vote democrat, because the democrats are the conservatives now.

        1. Attacking Iraq was not conservative. We had a handle on the region that was better with Saddam in power. He was a bastard, but so what? There's bastards all over the yard. Containing Iran was simple with him in power. Now we have Iran's Shias poised to take over in Iraq when we leave.

        2. Spending a trillion dollars on a war we didn't have to wage wasn't conservative, it was idiotic. For that price, we could rebuild every school in America, give computers and textbooks to every school, pay all teachers well and pay for university 4 year degree for everyone who wanted to go. We could also have put two colonies of 50 people on Mars.

        3. Not pursuing Osama bin Laden into Pakistan wasn't conservative, it was just stupid. Of course Musharraf had to oppose that publicly, but he would secretly be relieved if we had gone in there and scorched the earth. Now, 7 years after 9-11, we are a goddam laughng stock over there, Al Qaeda has regrouped, and we have all out troops keeping order in Iraq.

        So, yes - it is the role of the president to take care of the USA. And you know what that imbecile is doing (along with the imbeciles in Congress)? In the worst economic downturn since 1929, that idiot is spending $50 billion on saving infants born to mothers with AIDS in Africa. And those kids will almost all end up as orphans creating crime and becoming child soldiers.

        Sorry, gentlemen, while I may vote for a conservative, it isn't likely to be some nearly doddering old man using Henry Kissinger as an adviser on foriegn policy. I am probably going to vote democrat this time around because the republicans are not the party I thought it was. They are a bunch of old men who can't think straight and young fools who never had any brains to begin with.

This country was far better off in the 90's when we had a strong middle class & people actually made enough money to participate in the economy. Obama has support from the civilians, but very little from the governments of those allied nations. Even as he had crowds swooning over him, those very nations had their governments denouncing strong support for him, meaning that he is failing when it comes to obtaining the support that he actually needs to not just become the President, but to be even remotely effective. McCain doesn't need cheering masses, he needs governmental support, which is why he has been much quieter than Obama. He has been meeting with government leaders around the world, not those civilians who just bring votes but can't instigate change or establish alliances. Let Obama travel around the world, sure. He's making pointless stops, but it's his right. But an intelligent man would at least spend a bit of time trying to win over the governments themselves that have thus far majority wise not shown a high level of support. He's pandering for votes by looking for media attention with cheering crowds, while ignoring almos ALL of the people he should be meeting. Civilian supporters do not bring allied nations, only government support creates allied nations.

              Having been stationed in Germany for 2 years 15 years ago when there was a large sized force over there...I find it hard to believe that they could prove that there was that many soldiers there. "The press" has an informed opinion on who was there. What made them military, their haircuts, were they white or black...do people of different ethnic backgrounds not live in Germany? Everyone blamed Bush for the Military's woes, lets take a look at Clintons early out payment plan between 92-94 as well as the early retirement plan for senior non-commissioned officers that was in the same time frame. Don't spout on like you know something about the Military...Democrats hate the Military even though it is a necessity.

                          That's why I'm voting McCain. Business growth and support to lower consumer costs, not steal from the rich to lower profit margins and cause an increase in consumer costs for the rest of us to compensate, increasing the poverty level. Bush pandered enough, not providing the support needed and incentives for further research and development, and Obama takes that lack of support up several notches. I don't want to get stuck with what we have, and have it get worse, which is why I see Obama as a bad choice.

                          I still find it funny that in the last elections in France and Germany, they both picked conservative candidates. And since when did the Europeans all of the sudden become so good at politics that we should listen to their opinion on our candidates? Last time I checked, their politics have afforded them countless dictators and more revolutions and sweeping government changes than I care to count.

                          But speaking of Germany, the people in Obama must love him, because (borrowing this fact from another poster) his home state of illinois, with a 6.8% unemployment rate, is actually nearing Germany's 8%! Yes, lets listen to Europeans! I hate to break it to you, most europeans who have lived a portion of their life in America realize how much better our government functions.

                          As for Obama, he may be able to woo millions, but here is my viewpoint on him:
                          I'm tired of the "vision" and I'm ready for a plan.

                                If you had been paying attention to anything besides the idiots on FAUX NOISE you might have learned that Obama spent years in the trenches in Chicago advocating for working people, not just African Americans. When you do that kind of work, you learn a lot about how the governmental system works, and how to deal with the powers that be to get them to consider your point of view. You do not do that by yelling at people and spitting in their faces. You do that by clear, focused conversation. You do not get respect or compliance at the point of a gun. Obama's experience thare led him to run for the Illinois Senate, where he could continue advocating for the working people. He has been extraordinarily effective in that persuit. The middle class, (ie the working people opf this country) are the strength of this democracy. If you destroy that middle class and make virtual slaves of these people, uyou no longer have a democracy at all. You have an oligarchy. This is what the Republicans have been working toward for years. They want to rule not only the US, but the entire world. Read about the Bush family history, and that of the Pierce family as well ( Bush's mother's family) You will understand what ELITE and ENTITLEMENT really is.

                                  And what exactly did he advocate? What did he actually do besides saying that he spent years in the trenches advocating for working people? Yeah, I researched that little bit of history. Pushing to lower profit percentages for businesses that were already struggling, causing them to lay off workers and close buildings while increasing costs. Sure, there's something to be proud of. That's a piece of history that I can only imagine Obama wants to forget, it's a strong negative with regards to harmful Robin Hood economic reform stunts he's tried to pull which hurt the very people he claims it helps. Fox should really dig up that old dirt again, there's no way that it could help him. And yet you mention it as if it was a positive point in his life that us poor and middle class people should support him for. Attacking us by attacking others is still attacking us, it most definitely is NOT something that an Obama supporter should brag about, unless somehow giving speeches about helping the average worker and then pushing for reforms that cost them their jobs is by some weird stretch of reality actually a good thing.

                                  "Extrordinarily effective"? Illinois unemployement rate is 6.8 percent way above the national average of 5.5 percent. Illinois is Number 10 this quarter according to realty trac in foreclosures.

                                                You must not know much about Europeans. Why, you may not be able to point a country in Europe on a map when you're asked to do so! Just to show you example how culturally civilized Europe is: When I went there last december, in a major European airport I was amazed the way they handled everything politely and professionally. When I came to major American Airport they couldn't even speak clearly to be understood, they herded us like cattle. After living here so long I thought this is the norm! How pleasantly I was surprised! I wonder what's the difference? You figure!! It may be that Americans have outsourced even their culture, and replaced it with cheep labor...And Europeans don't hate America for her freedom, because they have freedom of their own, but they don't fluff it around like dumb birds and boast about it. Not that I'm saying American people do that , but I have seen more peacock feather fluffing in this administration then any other, and yet is all full of hot air...And as for success ... well, whatever success there was in the past is being shipped out and devoured by corporate vultures, so there isn't much to brag about, is it?

It doesn't take, and in fact you are better off without a College education to reason this out. All I am saying is "look before you leap". I am not a Republican. I am an American that cares deeply for my country. I want the people to take back the Government and not let the likes of Obama and McCain take it.                                                     The Reverend Wright references continue to blow me away, he probably is upset with America and may well be correct to feel that way. Judging from the man's age he came up in the 50's and 60's when blacks were fully second class citizens. Separate bathrooms, water fountains, couldn't sit at the lunch counter when all the while our country says "all men are created equal".

                                                    Tell me that anyone who had been treated that way, as a 2nd class citizen, would not have the right to be angry about it. I can certainly see that his upbringing was different than mine as a simple white suburban child, my mother still whisper's the word "black" when speaking about someone of color. One of my great loves for this country is the opportunties I was afforded to, maybe Wright didn't get to see that America.

                                                    These times were not all that long ago people, if it had happened to you you may feel a little differently too. I would argue that Reverend Wright doesn't hate America but more so hates the way America treated him - I think he should have the leeway to be somewhat ticked off about it.

                                                    Simply because Obama attended the mans church doesn't mean he has to share the views anymore than anyone attending a Catholic church should be considered a possible child molestor.

                                                    He's definitely ignoring special interest by not even being "intersted" enough to show up to vote in the Senate. He is NUMBER 3 in terms of most missed votes , he'd be number 2 except for the senator who had an aneurysm, Sad thing is McCain is number 1. Its amazing that the people who do the least amount of work want to be rewarded with a higher paying job. Pay me a senators salary of 169,300 a year for what is essentially a part time job and I'll be there every day!

                                                        Angry and vindictive are not the same thing. Believing that those times still exist is not being angry about things long past. Wright is like the soldier who goes to war, comes home and then still thinks he's in a battle zone and ends up thinking that everyone around him is the enemy. Out of nine of his sermons I listened to, four have actually been fairly normal. Five, however, would have driven me out of the church if I had ever tried to attend in person, and two of those were undeniably extremely racist. For being so against the way blacks were treated in the past, he sure seems to feel that it would be ok if whites were treated that way now, because they are apparently an inferior species and always have been, even before the time of slavery. Morality doesn't seem to exist in his church for at least half the time, unless I just happened to catch him on five bad days out of nine that I listened to.

                                                          Raising this as an issue only points out the continued arrogance of the Republican party and their apparent view that we can succeed as a country without the support of global friends. Thanks to this administration, we are almost uniformly hated abroad to the point that some leaders pointedly distance themselves from us. Our problems do not all originate within our borders. Economics and security are very much global issues that we cannot resolve without global support and cooperation. We need a leader who can reach out and mend broken fences lest we find ourselves hoisted by our own pitard.

Which is why trying to take heavy handed from that 1% is an absolutely ridiculous action during a poor economic time, because that redistribution leads to a push to reintegrate that 34% back into the upper class, which means increased costs but not just for those who received help, but for everyone else as well, which increases the poverty rate and requires yet another attempt to lower the percentage, which drops the poor lower and takes the middle class along for the ride.
                                                                    Those very numbers you stated are the EXACT reason why Obama's Robin Hood policies can not be implemented without hurting all of us. You have to support a boost within that 34%, increase profit percentages and then only take the increased percentages so that they still maintain that same steady 34% without that 34% being worth less. If a company sees a 10% profit, help boost it to 12% and then use the additional 2% to hold costs steady for the poor and middle class while allowing that 2% to go towards actually helping them. Take 2% when there's no boost and that 2% loss reflects back to the poor and middle class negatively. Your own stated numbers, those numbers provide the very reason that Obama cannot have his economic policies implemented, you cannot take from 1% of the population who controls the majority of funds when there's no boost to go along with it and not even expect it to affect the 99% remaining population negatively. Common sense here, and the numbers themselves show why.
                                                                    Here's the most basic common sense idea...boost business growth and use that boost to support the poor and middle class, which increases spending which boosts business further, which positively impacts costs even more which further helps the poor and middle class. With the numbers you yourself stated, why on earth would we want to do the opposite and follow Obama's suggestions which hurt the poor and middle class?

                                                                              I didn't know until I read this article that most of Obama's support from the "college-educated" is because of his race. I suppose the politically-correct image of white people voting for a black man, regardless of his views, exonerates them for 400 years of slavery. I would much rather Condoleeza Rice or Colin Powell as president or vice-president, but they're not running. They HAVE some substance and hard work in their background.

                                                                              What happened to voting for ideas? Obama leans toward socialism. If you want your government to make all your decisions for you, then vote for Change! Vote for Obama!

                                                                              I will choose to vote for the older, less glitzy John McCain because his ideas are sound. He's concerned about the environment, but proposes to hold down government spending. Most importantly, he will keep America's military strong, because everything else is moot if our nation is not secure.

                                                                                Obama talks a good talk, but his walk is far different. While in Afghanistan he snubbed lower military in favor of his photo op at basketball. And, in Europe, he canceled visits to military hospitals for his opportunity to give a grandiose speech in Berlin. Also, it worries me that he telegraphs his intentions to withdraw our troops from Iraq, so the enemy knows all they need to is sit on their hands for a few months and then pounce. If this happens, Iran will control the vast majority of oil deposits and we'll be forced to go back, and it won't be just Iraq, it will be Iran we'll be fighting with too. Imagine all the lives and money invested and then having to go back and do it all again, only the next time it will be much more expensive. Do it right the first time and we won't need to do it all over again.

                                                                                On the other side of the coin is McCain. The truth is that McCain is also dangerous, but in a different way. I believe he'll finish both Iraq and Afghanistan in a way that allows us to be victorious. But, I believe his domestic agenda is very thin and very worn out. It is doubtful that he will put forth any better energy policy than Bush. With McCain, we'll continue to burn more fossil fuels and cause irreparable damage to the environment. The environment can't take much more. Soon, the weather will be so hostile, it will be impossible to grow food to feed the world and we'll retreat into the dark ages again. My greatest fear of McCain is that he will probably be appointing enough Supreme Court judges to sink the whole ship!

                                                                                The fact is, there is not good choice for POTUS. I guess I'll make a decision in the voting booth, hold my nose, and pray.

                                                                                                The analysis in this column is essentially correct. Obama has his left nailed down. He will either have to continue to move to the center and attract the working class (and believe me they outnumber the latte sippers) or alienate them beyond recall. The people I work with are almost all Democrats to the bone. They voted for Hillary overwhelmingly after being soured by the Rev Wright escapade. The comments I've heard this morning have been caustic: "Gee--he must be running for president of Germany, too!" and "Who gives a rat's *** what Germany & France think?" And by the way, a lot of these people (women and men) have gone to tech school or community college. Like it or not, their viewpoint will have to be taken into account by Barry. The barely hidden, sneering contempt for the working class is typical of those on the left ("we know better"). On Election Day they'll turn out alright--- you Obama people should hold off the coronation until then.
